Book Marketing Makeover: 4 Book Promotion Predictions for 2012

Now, at the beginning of the year, is a good time to think about your plans from marketing your books. Here are four predictions I have for events or trends that could affect your book promotions.

ebook marketing 1. Ebooks will get more important. This trend is obvious. Ebooks are making a major impact on book sales. That means that you should plan to publish your books in all formats, both print and ebook formats, in the coming years. And, at the same time, learn how to market ebooks. Note: Ebook marketing is not the same as book marketing. Ebooks require a different strategy.

2. Online book sales will continue to increase. That means you must learn how to market your books online. If you don't have an integrated plan for marketing your books both offline and online, you will miss out on a lot of book sales. But you have to do more than have a website, write a blog, and spend time on Facebook and Twitter. The key tool for marketing on the Internet will continue to be creating relationships with high-traffic websites and blogs.

3. Book sales will diminish. The reality is that people are getting their entertainment, information, and inspiration from many sources: TV, blogs, social networks, websites, mobile apps, newsletters, teleseminars, etc. If you expect to make a living selling books only, you will be disappointed. You must expand your offerings to include not only printed and ebook versions of your content, but also audio, video, web, and/or app versions. And live versions: consulting, speaking, events, teleseminars, webinars, coaching, etc.

4. A universal prediction: The authors who take responsibility for their book sales will be the ones who see the most sales. This prediction, of course, is based on the experience of authors over the past 20 years. Those who take action gets the results. So, in one sense, this prediction is actually simply a statement of past results. But, note, it will hold true again this year. If you want more book sales, take more action.

Now, if you look carefully at the above four predictions, you'll quickly notice that these predictions are actually based on trends that have been occurring for a number of years.

Last year was one of the saddest years for bookselling - what with the demise of Borders and the closing of many good independents - but the neat thing is that many of those former Borders stores have been taken over by other booksellers. And, for the first time in years, there has been an increase in people taking a chance by opening new independent bookstores (I base this observation on my tracking of indie booksellers for my Top 700 Independent Bookstores list).

So, don't ignore indie booksellers. They can still be an incredible source of book sales and exposure.

Book Marketing Makeover: 10 Tips to Create Your Best Internet Radio Show

Guest post adapted from Blog Talk Radio

Internet radio shows are a great way to build a tribe, create relationships with many top websites and blogs, and produce new product that you can sell, give away, or use to build a brand.

Here are a few tips adapted from Blog Talk Radio's Ten Tips for Preparing for Your BlogTalkRadio Show (available free at http://www.BlogTalkRadio.com)

Blog Talk Radio

1. Choose a Title - Before setting up a radio show, be sure to select a show name you can live with. Also write a good description and decide on the keywords you want to focus on.

2. Be Consistent - When choosing to do a radio show, you'll build up a larger audience and create true fans if you host your show at the same time every week. A weekly show is best. Monthly is too infrequent to build a solid fan base.

3. Create an Intro - Every show needs a great intro. Add music, voice over, and pizazz to the introduction of your show. It also helps to have a closing outro to create a more professional sounding show.

4. Outline Your Show - If you want to avoid dead air or rambling shows, create an outline and stick to it.

5. Get Ready for Your Guests - Make sure your guests know the number to call in and the time and date for the show. Also prepare them with some questions you will be asking. And prepare yourself so you know your guest and what they will talk about as well as possible.

6. Queue Up Your Audio - Make sure you have your intro, outro, and other audio ready to go. It makes it easier for you to produce a professional-sounding show.

7. Test Your Show - Before announcing your show publicly, carry out one or two test shows so you can work out all the kinks in running your show.

8. Find a Quiet Place - Broadcast your show from a room that is quiet and away from any potential interruptions. Be sure to turn off any phones, ban the kids and pets, and soundproof your room as much as possible.

9. Dial in Ahead of Time - Call in 10 to 15 minutes ahead of time to launch the chat room, make sure all the sound settings are correct, and get settled before going on the air.

10. Optimize Sound Quality - Dial into your show with a high-quality landline or high-quality headset (if using Skype). Don't use a speaker phone, cellphone, or conference line.

Author Success Story: Selling Books in Grocery Stores

Wired

Back in 1993 I convinced a local Richmond, Virginia grocery chain, Ukrop’s, to let me set up a table near their grill during dinner time when people would have to wait for their orders so I could sell copies of Wired. I sold over 100 copies, including to the woman who whispered to her husband, “I thought she was the sample lady.”

The sale went so well the chain decided to start carrying local authors and hold similar appearances.

Wired is now available on Nook, Kindle, Smashwords & iBooks!

Author Success Story: The Wonderful World of Book Marketing

Here is a success story from one of the members of The Book Marketing Network:

After some time listening and trying ideas over and over, I am at last making headway.

E-books have been my greatest success, where I have maintained between 3,000 to 5,000 in Kindle ratings. And in Magic&Wizards on Amazon, I stay between 30 to 60. In Kindle epic books I remain in the top 100. So I am a happy camper.

I am selling between 20 to 30 books a day and have 53 book reviews.

My web page allows readers to ask questions and even give ideas on how they would like to see the storyline go.

My second book Dustin Anfeald - Return to Stormvale will be out the day after Thanksgiving.

My book has been chosen by Amazon for a new trial in which my book is 100% returnable!

Writing is FUN. Getting published--HARD. Marketing well..... errrrrrr NEAR impossible lol

Keep up, my fellow authors. Times are hard but your work will reward you as long as you put in some hard effort.

Book Trailer Book Proposals: Get Dumped

This is a great book trailer. Not all authors can afford this level of production, but I bet there are a lot of authors who could get friends together to do something similar and hire the next door teenager to jazz up the video.

Check it out:

Note: This is a book proposal. I don't believe they have a publisher yet. Check out http://www.dumped411.com for details.

This video should go viral. It hasn't yet, only 361 views, but it should. Come back in two weeks to see how well it has done.
