Colleen Hoover: A New York Times Bestselling Self-Publisher

Below is an excerpt from Jeff Rivera's excellent interview with Colleen Hoover, a New York Times bestselling author who self-published several novels, including Slammed:

Who's the reigning Indie Book Queen of the moment? Colleen Hoover, of course. Ms. Hoover is now topping all the self-published book charts and cracking the New York Times bestsellers list in the process....

I just wrote these books less than a year ago, so I never tried to get them traditionally published. In all honesty, I wrote them for fun and never thought of myself as an author. I uploaded them to Amazon so friends and family could read them, which is why I made them free the first week.

I never in my wildest dreams thought they would become bestsellers. If I had this goal while writing them, I probably would have freaked out and not finished them. It's honestly insane how this has all sort of snowballed. It's been amazing, to say the least....

When I first put my books out, I took advantage of Amazon's KDP program. I really think the KDP program is a great way to get your book into the hands of readers. I had over 4,000 downloads in two days. I can't think of any other marketing tool that can get your actual book into that many hands in such a short amount of time.

After that, it was a whole lot of word of mouth. Of course I marketed to my Facebook friends, but at the time I had 10 Twitter friends and only 2 followers.

I spent the first three months after writing Slammed working on the sequel, so I didn't spend a whole lot of time on the internet. After putting out the sequel, I was getting about 10 downloads a day of both books. Those ten turned into 12, then 14, and so on and so on.

By the end of March, a blogger at Maryse.net read the book and blogged about it. She's got a huge following and the books received over 100 downloads that day. Since then, the sales have steadily climbed. I've noticed when a blogger reviews it, especially bloggers with a huge following like Maryse, it really makes a big impact on sales.

I didn't really focus on getting the books in the hands of bloggers in the beginning because I was really new at this and wasn't sure what worked. Now that I know, you can bet I'll be sending out those ARC's of my next release.

A fan made this book trailer about Colleen's novel, Slammed. Very cool.

Kindle Ebook Giveaways: Are They Worth It?

Are the Kindle ebook giveaways enabled by Amazon's Kindle Select program worth doing?

Enjoy the MoneyOn May 8 and 9, 2012, Steve Miller offered his personal finance book, Enjoy the Money! How to Make It, Save It, Invest It and Give It, free for two days as a Kindle ebook.

According to Steve, he didn't really do anything else to promote the giveaway except for small mentions on a book marketing listserv and a book marketing forum.

Here are the results of Steve's Kindle ebook giveaway:

First day ebook downloads - 327 people downloaded his ebook on the first day.

Second day ebook downloads - Over 17,000 people downloaded the ebook on the second day.

Increased ebook sales - After the freebie promotion, he went from selling 1 ebook a day to 12 ebooks a day consistently.

Maintaining ebook sales ranks - 4 weeks after the ebook giveaway, Enjoy the Money! still ranks #1 or #2 in the Kindle ebook store for real estate ebooks. It also ranks #5 for career ebooks and #7 for investment ebooks.

Increased Amazon income - These sales increased his Amazon income by $500 per month.

Paperback book sales - He did not see any immediate increase in sales for the paperback edition of Enjoy the Money!

Long-term paperback sales - But, over time, he has seen sales of the paperback increase from 3 copies the week before the giveaway to 16 sales during the first week of June (which he attributed to the Kindle giveaway promotion in May).

Book Authors Perennial Question: Where Do You Get Your Ideas?

One question authors get asked a lot is: Where Do You Get Your Ideas?

Well, here's where I got my idea for a new Kindle ebook, 101 Ways to Blog as an eBook Author. I got the idea earlier this evening while listening to Ty Cohen present his Kindle Cash Flow webinar.

101 Ways to Blog as an Ebook Author

I thought: Why not turn some of my blog posts into books? One of my longest blog posts is one I did on 101 Ways to Blog as a Book Author. That, in turn, was inspired by another blog post I did in response to something I saw on Ezine Articles: 45 Ways to Blog as a Novelist: Tips for Writers of Fiction.

I've been asked many times by ebook authors to write some books specifically on how to market ebooks. During Ty's webinar, I realized I should do that. I'll be writing several such books, but I thought I'd start with one that is half-written: 101 Ways to Blog as an eBook Author.

Of course, as is my usual pattern, I'm expanding the ebook to include tons of samples and some more ideas. It'll be done sometime this week or early next week.

So, I'll update the links on this page when the Kindle ebook, 101 Ways to Blog as an eBook Author, is available.

First Million Selling Ebook Author: James Patterson

Hachette Book Group, the publisher for James Patterson's novels, announced that he has now sold 1.14 million units of ebooks for Kindle, iPad, and other ebook readers.

The top seller is his most recent novel, I, Alex Cross. Patterson has sold more than 205 million copies of his novels around the world.

Patterson supports the sales of his ebooks. As he has said, "If e-books get people who might otherwise not be reading to pick up a book, then that makes me happy."
