Book Promotion Tip: How to Sell Books Using Facebook

Guest post by Steve Harrison

Note: This article originally appeared in Steve's paid print newsletter Book Marketing Update which goes to members of his Million Dollar Author Club. You can get more information at http://www.milliondollarauthorclub.com.

John's Note: Many of these book promotion ideas for Facebook apply to novels as well as nonfiction books and children's books. So don't be shy. Use these novel ways to promote your novel on Facebook.

Write Your Book on Facebook

Book Marketing Update Leif Peterson has a unique claim to fame: He’s the author of Missing, the first novel written entirely on Facebook. Initially started as a short writing challenge from a friend, Peterson soon realized the story, about a man who sees his own face on a Missing Person poster, had greater potential.

“I started posting daily installments on Facebook pretty much on a whim, but right away I realized that there were a lot of people paying attention,” Peterson says. “The fact that people were following along and often leaving comments was very motivating.”

For four months, five days a week, he posted new installments to his story and attracted many eager readers. Some of his biggest fans frequently shared their opinions on his Facebook page, and expressed frustration at having to wait 24 hours for the next chapter. Peterson decided to reward some of those readers by naming new characters after them.

Though Peterson had previously published fiction commercially, he chose to self-publish Missing about a year after he completed it, after his agent declined the story. Because of the unusual nature of the story’s genesis, he ended up getting a lot of unexpected attention online.

According to Peterson, “Once the book was published I sent out a press release. Interestingly, the press release got repeated on hundreds of websites and blogs. It even showed up on the New Yorker’s website, and a guy in the Philippines did a podcast about it.”

As Peterson’s story shows, Facebook’s viral quality makes this giant of social networking sites an important tool for any author’s promotional strategy. Fortunately, you don’t have to write an entire novel on Facebook to take advantage of its marketing power.

Promote Your Book Via Profile Matching

Karen Morss, the author of the self-published children’s book Flying Poodles: A Christmas Story, discovered another unique and fun way to promote her work — through profile matching.

“I had about 200 Facebook friends at the time, and I decided to post a new profile photo that was me and my standard poodle, Miss Lucy Ball,” Morss says. “All of a sudden, Facebook started suggesting friends that had poodles in their profiles. I also joined all the poodle pages on Facebook, and within six months I had over 1,800 friends, 1,600 of whom own poodles, or at least love them.”

For Morss, the increase in Facebook friends led to an increase in book sales, as her story started being seen by the right audience.

Novelists: Create Character Profiles

For fiction authors, a fun Facebook promotion idea is to create pages and profiles for your main characters. Seth Grahame-Smith has a page for his bestselling novel, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and has created character profiles for Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth Bennett, and Corpse Bill, among others. The page for his book has nearly 13,000 Likes and the characters remain active on Facebook, interacting with fans.

Book Promotion Guidelines: Facebook Tips

With Facebook, the promotion possibilities are endless — but it’s important to understand how the site works, and what members want (or don’t want) to see in their friend feeds. Here are some tips for you on generating Facebook buzz without alienating your followers.

Tip No. 1: Do use Facebook’s tools to add friends.

Because Facebook is an interactive network, it will often suggest friends, events and groups for you to like. If you’ve always ignored these little prompts that appear on the side of the page, start checking them out. The more friends you have on Facebook, the greater opportunity you’ll have for people to find out more about you and your book.

Make sure your profile includes easily accessible information about your book. You can fill out the About Me box under your profile picture with your book title and a brief description, so that visitors to your profile can immediately see you’re an author. Don’t forget to list your website under your personal information, too!

Tip No. 2: Don’t add friends or join groups blindly.

While it’s good to have a lot of Facebook friends, it’s better to have a lot of quality Facebook friends. There are still quite a few trolls out there looking to add people just for the sake of getting more page views to promote a website — usually an unsavory one. It only takes a second to view the profile for any friend or group request you receive, so make sure to check it out before you accept.

Tip No. 3: Do join groups that share interests related to your book.

Like Morss has done this with her poodle book. Joining relevant Facebook groups can give you a built-in audience that is interested in what you have to say. It’s easy to find groups on Facebook — simply enter a subject in the search box, and then click on the Groups tab of the results page.

Once you’ve joined a group, make sure you’re active and participatory. Being a static group member is not likely to help with your promotional efforts. Introduce yourself on the group’s wall, and participate in discussions and conversations that are going on within the group. This increases the chance that other group members will want to click through to your profile.

Tip No. 4: Don’t be a broken record.

If there’s one thing most people on Facebook don’t like, it’s friends who do nothing but ask them to buy something or join something every time they update their status. Don’t make every status update about your book. This is the fastest way to get people on Facebook to ignore you, or even unfriend you.

Instead, you can post links to interesting articles that are related to your book’s subject, share funny or inspirational quotes, add photos or videos, or offer valuable content for your friends or group members, such as free downloads or discounts.

The best way to promote on Facebook is to make your status updates interesting enough to get people to view your profile — which is where you should keep all the information about your book —and keep them coming back for future updates.

Viral Videos: Piggybacking on a YouTube Viral Video

Whether you agree with the man who shot his daughter's portable computer, you can't deny the viral impact of the video he made showing him do it - over 23,000,000 views in less than a week.

You can watch the video here (Facebook Parenting: For the troubled teen):

Now, that's an incredible number of views for a video that runs over 8 minutes. Unheard of. He obviously struck a chord with a lot of people.

But here is the lesson I want to teach you today: You can piggyback off of a viral video. Note the views of the following videos that are showcased on the YouTube page for the above viral video:

Viral Video Piggybacks Pin It

828,000 views, 34,247 views, 319,794 views, 154,701 views (before the video was removed by the user), 148,747 views, 214,298 views - all within a week.

Notice the titles of the videos: Re: Facebook Parenting: For the troubled teen. If you want to piggyback off a viral video, give your video a similar name.

If you have written a book on parenting or have a website devoted to parenting issues (or computers, or guns, or teens), why haven't you created a response video to this video? You could easily reach hundreds of thousands of people in as little as a week - with a simple, heartfelt video made in response.

You don't have to agree with the man. In fact, you might get more views if you disagree with him.

Additional response videos and their number of views: 26,821 views, 29,113 views, 174,500 views, 34,247 views, 112,415 views, 145,949 views, 16,852 views, 195,686 views (Korean), 38,570 views, 104,715 views, 8,792 views, 59,332 views, 409,784 views, 49,978 views, etc. Again, all of these views were accumulated in less than a week.

What are you waiting for?

As the man in the original video said, "Get off your behind and do something." (That's a paraphrase).

Book Marketing Tips: Give Your Book Sales a Shot in the Arm

Guest post by Lynnette Phillips

There are no secrets to increasing your book sales. There are, however, many ways to achieve this goal. Here are some starting points.

First of all, for best sales results you’ll want to combine both online and offline techniques.

Secondly, protect your piggy bank. Take advantage of free publicity.

Book Marketing Tips 1. Never stop promoting. Marketing and promoting your book doesn’t have to take time from your writing. It may not be the most enjoyable part of becoming a successful author, but with a little diligence it can become habit forming and that is what you’re shooting for!

Two of the most profitable words available to book marketers are consistency and frequency. You can accomplish consistency and frequency by using RSS feeds for blog posts and pre-scheduling programs (such as HootSuite or Social Oomph) for Twitter and Facebook posts.

2. Create an activity calendar. Get organized and keep track of your marketing and promotional efforts. You might want to set up a calendar or a spreadsheet, maybe even both, whatever works best for you.

You’ll want to be aware of what is working best for you and what doesn’t. Follow the results. If it doesn’t work, why keep doing it? Also, you don’t want to miss an interview or speaking opportunity. And you might want to schedule a block of time each week to write Twitter posts to pre-schedule.

3. Print promotional items. Turn a business card into a promotional item. On the front include an image of your book cover, your name, title (author, of course) and the purchase URL [Do you have an Amazon vanity URL?].

Use the back side for prepublication offers or discounts. Example, Purchase your copy today at Thriller Con and get 20% off.

Bookmarks can be used as calling cards for your book.

Drop a postcard in the mail with a quick message to a TV station booking agent or news journalist.

4. Audio, video and pictures help readers relate to you. Create them whenever you attend a literary event or speaking engagement. Use them when you read excerpts, do an interview, or share expert tips. They encourage visitors to stay on your website longer and are great as background items for appearances.

5. Connect with the community. Volunteer at the library, speak to the local garden club, or participate in a local writers group. How many people have you talked to who dream of writing their own book? Offer your talents at the senior center or to a writing class at the community college. Read an excerpt of your book at the coffee shop.

6. Plan an event. Schedule a Google+ hangout or a Twitter contest. Or organize a literary event and involve other area authors.

7. Use press releases and public service announcements (PSA). A press release is your chance to become the news. Keep in mind this is not an ad, though. It helps me to think of it more as a short article.

Announce the publication of your new book using a press release but don‘t stop there. Use a press release anytime you want to gain media exposure: to promote an event and project, to offer information, or to attract an audience when planning an appearance or community event.

A PSA is a shorter version of a press release. In fact, you can use the first paragraph of your press release as a PSA. Deliver your PSA to community news departments at local radio or TV stations to be included in community calendar announcements.

8. “Free” is a very powerful tool. Online you can promote giveaways of your latest release. Use Facebook and Goodreads to promote the event. Offline donate copies of your book to the library, a school, or a local event.

9. Create a media kit. Offline assemble a synopsis of your book with a picture of the cover, the ISBN and purchase information. Include a testimonial or review quote. Also enclose a sample Q&A and your bio, including your picture and an author’s statement describing why you love writing, what you’ve written, your inspiration, etc.

Add any promotional materials you’ve had printed and assemble it into a two pocket folder. Distribute these to radio and TV stations. Contact the newspaper arts & entertainment reporters.

Online make sure your website includes a page for your media kit. Make it easy to share information about you and your book.

10. Develop a social media strategy. Dealing with Twitter and Facebook everyday steals your morning away before you know it. Make a plan to spend a minimum amount of time on social networks and stick to it. It’ll become a habit soon enough.

On days there just isn’t time for social networking, do a quick check and get on with your day.

Log in to Twitter and check your Mentions for any chatter. Perhaps search a couple of #hashtags to keep up on the chatter for subjects of interest.

Scan Google Alerts for any important or interesting articles.

Do a filtered search on LinkedIn and flag any industry or genre (of your choice) related posts or articles to attend to later.

Log in to Facebook and scan your wall and comments.

Final advice: Spend a few minutes every day promoting your book.

Jack Canfield on How He Got Lucky in Marketing His Books

Here is an excerpt from a long interview Jack Canfield did recently with the Economic Times, a division of The Times of India.

For those of you who haven't been paying attention for the past 15 years, Jack Canfield is the co-originator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books, which has over 225 books in print with total sales of over 500 million copies worldwide in 47 languages.

Here, again, is the excerpt from Economic Times (note that the video was not part of the interview, but does talk about one of his key points in the interview):

Did you just get lucky? Or was there a method to it?

I believe that people make their own luck by great preparation and good strategy. We used The Rule of 5 which I write about in The Success Principles, which is to do 5 specific action steps each day to move you towards the completion of a goal.

So every day for the 14 months before we hit the New York Times bestseller list we would take 5 actions steps. We would make 5 phone calls to newspapers to review the book. We would send out 5 free copies of the book to reviewers.

Once we sent copies to all the producers of TV shows like Touched by An Angel and when the producer got hold of the book, they required everyone on their staff, including the cameramen, script writers and actors to read it. That story reached the Hollywood Reporter which published it and then that article went out to syndication and appeared in many more newspapers all across the United States.

1001 Ways to Market Your BooksSo we worked very hard. We actually studied how to create a bestselling book by interviewing 10 bestselling authors and everything they told us they'd done, we then did the same.

We also bought a book called 1001 Ways to Market a Book by John Kremer.

We made a post-it for each of the 1001 ways and put it on a wall, where our commitment was to do everything in the book and then remove each post-it until we were finished.

It took us the better part of a year to do it, but I believe it is this kind of commitment to a long series of actions that is what's always required to create major success that lasts.

It's interesting that I wrote about the Rule of Five in the 1989 edition of 1001 Ways to Market Your Books, Chapter 9. Here's what I wrote:

I'm giving you the basic rule, a rule that forbids excuses. I call it the rule of five.

All it takes is five promotions a day. Really, that's all it takes. Mail a letter. Send out a news release. Phone someone. Take an editor to lunch. Do a phone interview. Give a speech. Jot down a postcard. It need  not require much time - 15 to 20 minutes is enough - but it can make a world of difference on how well your book sells.

Meet Top TV Producers and Magazine Editors at the National Publicity Summit

Do you want to be interviewed on top TV shows and networks like CNN, 48 Hours, ABC's The View, Fox News, and Today Show?

Would you like to get written up in major national publications like Newsweek, Health, Redbook, Time, Family Circle, O the Oprah Magazine, Entrepreneur, People, Inc., Parents, or the New York Times?

Today you have a limited opportunity to get more publicity in America's biggest media outlets by signing up for my friend Steve Harrison's National Publicity Summit, April 25-28 in New York City.

This Summit is a one-of-a-kind conference where you'll get to personally meet more than 100 top journalists and producers and pitch your story to them, one-on-one and face-to-face.

To ensure everyone gets enough one-on-one time with the media, Steve is only admitting 100 attendees, so go here now for the details or risk missing out: http://bit.ly/NatPRSummit

Editors and producers from the above media were represented at previous Summits and Steve expects most to return, along with journalists and producers from other top national TV shows, radio programs, and big-time print media.

Having a face-to-face meeting with an editor or producer dramatically increases the chances they'll write about you -- or put you on their show.

When you grab your info packet at this website (http://bit.ly/NatPRSummit), you'll see just a few of the results Steve's previous Summit attendees have gotten including the following:
  • Ron and Lisa Beres were booked on the Today Show.
  • Steve Shapiro was the subject of a big story in O the Oprah Magazine after meeting the writer at the National Publicity Summit.
  • Lauri Loewenberg appeared on both ABC's The View and Good Morning America.
  • Jim Vonmier got on the CBS Evening News and CBS Early Show as a result of the training and contacts he received during the Summit.
  • Barry Spilchuk was interviewed on Fox News Channel within five hours of meeting the producer at the Summit!
  • Sandy Clemmons got written-up in Health Magazine, Money Magazine and TV Guide -- all from meeting journalists face-to-face at the Summit. Even better, since attending, her royalty checks have gone up over 700%!
  • and many, many others!

Again, only 100 attendees will be admitted and the early registration discount goes away after Tuesday, February 21st, so if you're interested in attending go here now: http://bit.ly/NatPRSummit.

Note: I am an affiliate of the National Publicity Summit, but I would and have recommended it - but only if you are ready to go on national TV or be interviewed in a national magazine. If you are ready, go for it!

In the meantime, you can listen in here to the teleseminar I recorded several weeks ago on my real birthday (January 16).

You can listen to this free book promotion teleseminar at the following URL: http://instantteleseminar.com/?eventID=25717449.

At the same URL, you can also download the teleseminar as an MP3 for listening as you drive, pack your books, jog, exercise, or work on your computer.

Blog Posts That Get Read and Shared: Manifestos and Lists

Celestine Chua of Singapore has built her Personal Excellence blog into one of the top 40,000 websites in the entire world by posting lists and manifestos.

List Blog Posts

Below are a few of her most popular list blog posts. Such list blog posts are popular because they are fun to read, more likely to be shared, and always challenging. More people comment on list blog posts than almost any other kind of blog post.
12 Meaningful Movies With Important Life Lessons to Learn

15 Amazing Commercials That Will Inspire the Greatness in You

15 Free, Beautiful Inspirational Wallpapers for Your Desktop

10 Powerful & Inspiring Graduation Speeches You Don’t Want to Miss

25 Most Inspirational Songs of All Time

101 Most Inspiring Quotes of All TimeVol 1Vol 2Vol 3Vol 4

101 Things to Do Before You Die

101 Ways to Live Your Life to the Fullest

101 Important Questions to Ask Yourself in Life
Manifestos

She also writes Manifestos, which she then summarizes in neat little graphics like the following:

8 Habits

The above graphic came from her manifesto on the 8 Habits of Highly Productive People.

Note: Manifestos generate interest simply from their names. And manifestos get shared more than other documents, reports, or white papers. When writing a report, call it a manifesto and you will almost always get more readers (and more social shares).

Celestine's Blog Success Story

Celestine started her blog in December 2008. In the following three years, her blog has become one of the top personal development websites in the world - with over a million pageviews every month.

Her blog has also gotten her interviews with magazines, TV, and online media - including CNN International, CBS Business Network, Asia One, and Simply Her. In addition, she has been invited to speak in Europe, the United States, and many parts of Asia. All because of her blog.

Does her story inspire you to do more with your blog? Will you start creating more lists? Will you write a manifesto? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks.

Note: The most popular blog posts on this Book Marketing Bestseller blog are the list posts featured on the top right hand corner of this page. Not only do I like these posts the most (that's why I now feature them), but my readers do as well.

EBook Marketing Courses: Blogging, Email, and Video

Here are a few additional courses that I've recommend to the students in my Blog Tour Palooza program - to supplement their promotional activities and to help them monetize their blogs. You might find them useful as well

Blogging

How to Start a Blog That Matters

How to Start a Blog That Matters - If you don't have a blog (or have one that's needs help), this course covers all the fundamentals of starting a blog, keeping it going, and promoting it. $97 I love the title. It speaks to the quality of the people behind this course.

Affiliate Blog Empire

Affiliate Blog Empire - How to make money with your blog via ClickBank commissions. Includes a blog cheat sheet, case studies, what blog plugins to use, and much more. $197

Video Marketing

Video Marketing Mastery

Video Profits Mastery - This special course offers a simple plan to get your website ranked on page 1 of Google in less than 5 hours (for long-tail keywords you choose). Note: The price will keep rising until this offer is withdrawn – which could be soon. Check it out soon. At the time of this writing, the price was $21.10.

Email Marketing

Email Marketing Tycoon

Email Marketing Tycoon Course - A fancy overblown name, but a good book on how to build a mailing list and create income through email marketing. Includes the Funnel Spy Optimization Software for testing and tracking your customer responses to your emails. Only $7 but I don't know how long the offer at that price will last.

Note: I am an affiliate on most of the above programs so I get paid if you decide to buy the course. But I only featured courses that I believe are actually good programs. Check them out by clicking the images above or by clicking the title of each program.
